The Victorian Cancer Biobank is a Consortium established in 2006 with $7 million funding from the Victorian Government through a Science Technology Innovation Grant from the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.

In 2009 the Victorian Government through the Victorian Cancer Agency provided additional funding for expansion to regional Victoria, the support of clinical and project specific research and for the implementation of a pathology digital imaging system.

Ongoing funding of $6.1 million has been committed by the Victorian Cancer Agency to support the Biobank's operations through to mid 2012.

The Biobank is now one of the largest multi-centre collection facilities of its kind in the world, collecting tissue and blood from donors at 27 public and private hospitals in metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong.  The Operations Model shows how the various collection, processing and distribution sites link with the consortium member sites.
